There have been over 100 gold-backed cryptocurrency projects that have launched over the years, though many of them have not survived.
I’ve already compiled the most comprehensive guide to gold-backed cryptocurrencies, but if you are just looking for how and where to buy gold-backed cryptocurrencies, then read on.
This post lists active gold-backed tokens that are publicly trading, those that are available in private exchanges, and upcoming ICOs.
Where to buy gold-backed cryptocurrency
Like most altcoins, gold-backed cryptocurrencies are not universally listed on every exchange. In fact, you may find that your preferred gold-backed token is only available on one exchange. There are also some that are only listed on their own in-house app or exchange.
If you already know what gold-backed cryptocurrency you want, check with the official website for buying instructions. By checking with the official token website you will save time looking around on exchanges.
Most gold-backed cryptocurrencies are bought with Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH), so you will need a balance of those tokens first.
Binance is the world’s largest crypto exchange and is an efficient way to buy BTC and ETH. They facilitate cash deposits from multiple currencies around the world.
Coinbase is the one of the most well known sites to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum. They are ideal if you are new and just want to get started quickly. (This link will also give you $10 on your first $100 deposit.)
Here is an ongoing list of gold-backed cryptocurrencies that are available to buy.
100% gold-backed cryptocurrency
This list includes gold-backed cryptocurrencies that are 100% gold-backed (not partially backed or mixed with other assets). Each token has a fixed weight of gold (for example 1 token = 1 gram of gold).

Initial Coin Offering (ICO)
An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is how a new cryptocurrency raises money for its startup. A token is given a set rate, and there may be bonuses for early buyers.

Buy Gold With Bitcoin
If you’re not ready to commit to any of the gold-backed token projects on offer, another alternative is to buy gold with bitcoin at Vaultoro. This is a gold vaulting service that allows you to buy and sell gold with bitcoin. The gold is 100% your legal property and is fully insured in Swiss vaults.
Vaultoro is ideal if you prefer to park your crypto gains in gold instead of cashing out into a fiat currency. Read more about Vaultoro.
Other ways to buy gold
If you prefer to buy gold that is not involved in cryptocurrency, then read this guide on how to buy gold online.
To buy gold in the traditional way (directly in-store with a gold merchant) then check out the gold dealers directory.

Hi James,
I am grateful to find you…I have been looking.
I would love to learn from you and be able to read you newsletter and blog if you have one.
I want to buy XRP from USD that is in an account where they won’t sell XRP to United States clients, or at all afaik.
Can you recommend steps and a reputable site where I could make smooth transactions to purchase XRP?
I am new at this and every wrong move I have made has been costly. I am sure you already know about that part 🙂
I have cold storage that will accept XRP.
Do I have to buy BC, move it to my cold storage, then move it again to another site to buy XRP with it? Would you recommend a particular online wallet?
I hope I am making sense to you and that I hear back from you.
Thank you for your site and patience!
Hi Lynn,
Ripple (XRP) isn’t gold-backed, but if you are looking for a way to buy it (or any token) the easiest way is to check coinmarketcap. Go to the XRP page, and the bottom of the page there is a list of all the markets where it is available
https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/xrp/markets/
I see you can buy XRP at Bitfinix and Kraken (looks for XRP/USD), which are large exchange sites.
Good luck!
Hi James,
I thank you for getting back to me.
I wish I could purchase XRP at Kraken. It would be so much easier than trying to find another site. They said they will not sell it to USA accounts. I don’t know why. I will check out coinmarketcap.com
Thank you again, Lynn
Hi, Wondering why AABBG is not on this page?
Hi James, can you help with a reliable exchange where I can purchase GoldMoney token?
